ACUEDUCTOS reports impact on SERGIO COVAS system due to voltage fluctuationsNine pumping stations went out of operation, affecting the service of 37,369 customers in Zone 1(San Juan, Puerto Rico – August 15, 2026) – José Rivera Ortiz, Executive Director of the Metro Region of the Aqueduct and Seawater Authority (AAA), that voltage fluctuations recorded during today’s afternoon affected the operation of components associated with the Sergio Cuevas Filters Plant and caused the decommissioning of nine pumping stations serving customers in Zone 1 of the Planned Interruptions Plan.The fluctuations were recorded after, at 5:08 p.m., a failure occurred in the 230 kV Transmission Center of the South Coast Central, which affected the transmission line connecting to the EcoElectrica plant. As a result of the failure, the three EcoElectrica units went out of service. LUMA Energy's technical staff is working on repairs to enable the units to return to service.As a result of the voltage fluctuations, the Fairview pumping stations, Cupey Water System (CWS), Lomas del Viento, Morcelo, Carruzos 4, Carruzos 5, Las 400, Cedros and Jardines de Carolina went out of operation.The Carraízo dam pumping system is already operating again at capacity. However, new voltage fluctuations can cause disruptions in equipment needed to maintain the production of the Sergio Cuevas Filters Plant and the distribution of water.At the moment, 59,155 customers, equivalent to 61.29%, are serviced, while 37,369 customers, or 38.71%, remain without service after the departure of the nine pumping stations.As the pumping stations return to operation and the levels and pressures stabilize, the service will gradually recover in the affected sectors.“We are working to recover the affected pumping stations and stabilize the system.While the Carraízo dam pumping is again operating at capacity, additional voltage fluctuations could affect water production and distribution and delay the recovery of service in Zone 1,” said Rivera Ortiz.The AAA’s operational staff is monitoring the Sergio Cuevas Filter Plant, the Carraízo dam and the pumping stations to respond to any changes that may affect the continuity of operations.The AAA shall continue to timely report any situation that has an impact on the service or on the development of the Plan of Programmed Interruptions, through the official channels of the Authority in acueductos.pr.gov and on social networks under @AcueductosPR. ###
